The Top Five of 2010: Jason's Picks

As I said in my review for True Grit, 2010 was a terrible year for movies. I ventured to a theatre perhaps five times this year and sought out very few of the year's offerings on DVD. Given that our Basement duties require us to seek out the odd, obscure and crappy, Shawn and I have little time to catch up on the latest releases anyway.

But I was able to scrounge up a Top Five for the year, which are listed below. Keep in mind these are my biased choices based on what I've seen. Films that could very well be in the running include The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, The Fighter and a slew of others. But, based on what I've watched, I will stand by and hang by this list.

Remember, Shawn and I are back in The Basement next Friday (Jan. 7) at 10 p.m. PST on 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops and www.thex.ca. The podcast will be up by the Monday. We'll put the urban legend documentary Cropsey and the mockbuster sequel Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus on the chopping block. Stick with us!

1) True Grit: We didn't need a remake of John Wayne's classic Western, but Joel and Ethan Coen have gone back to the source material, the 1968 novel of the same name, and done a retelling that's all their own. The film is a fine balance between drama and action picture, with a healthy dose of character study and black comedy added to the mix. And don't forget four of the best performances anyone is likely to see in years. Best of all, True Grit is relentlessly entertaining. You don't need to wind your brain up too much to enjoy the hell out of it.

2) Inception: How does one describe Inception? Smart, innovative and thrilling come to mind. So does mind blowing, visual stunning and incredible. The Dark Knight was a masterpiece, but that property wasn't 100 per cent Christopher Nolan's. Inception is, and it is a great piece of work. A masterwork from a master craftsman. This is a movie people will go see and then argue about and then, very likely, go see again. It is the must-see film of the summer, if not the year. Nolan dares us to think big here, yet he also thrills us with some of the biggest and best action scenes to ever reach the big screen. Inception is the film movie fans have waited all year for, it's a slick brain-twister that makes the year's other mainstream releases look boring and empty-headed in comparison . . . because they are.

3) The Town: A seriously awesome Ben Affleck movie? You bet! The actor, who quickly became the butt of many jokes at the beginning of the last decade, re-invented himself as a director to watch with Gone Baby Gone. With The Town he pulls out all the stops in front of the camera and behind it. This is a gritty, exciting, emotional, fast paced and fun crime picture. In other words, it's a brilliant piece of work. Affleck surrounds himself with a solid supporting cast, including The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner, and cements his credentials as a serious filmmaker who doesn't let style get in the way of a good story. An award-worthy picture.

4) Restrepo: It's tough to put my feelings for Restrepo into coherent thoughts. As a filmgoer, my mind has been trained to expect certain things from a war movie, and Restrepo gives me all of them. But this isn't fiction, it's real. The documentary is like a punch in the gut at times. Other moments are an amusing portrait of men who have chosen a soldier's life. We see them bond, suffer boredom together, live together, die together and grieve together in one of the deadliest place in the world. I felt like I was there for all of it and suffered the deployment with them. I had to keep telling myself this was really happening, which proves what an exceptional documentary this is.

5) Harry Brown: One of the best movies of the year featuring a powerful performance by Michael Caine, who balances ferocity and frailty throughout. The film is a button pusher, making one feel sad. angry and vengeful, often all at once. The first two minutes are among the harrowing ever put on film. What follows is somber and emotionally jarring. When Brown turns to vengeance, the film becomes about a man who has nothing to lose and the results will make you want to cheer for joy and cover your mouth with shock. Harry Brown offers no easy answers, but it does satisfy one's brain and bloodlust all at once.

Silvester!

"Hollywood Crush's Top 5 films of 2011"

Okay, so this one's a no-brainer. We cannot wait for the fourth installment of the "Twilight" saga—our No. 2 most anticipated film of 2011—to hit theaters November 18.

Like "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" before it, we suspect that the splitting point between Parts 1 and 2 will be a well-guarded secret. It's likely, however, that the first movie will end around the start of Book Three: the dividing line between Bella's human and vampire life.

We can already visualize the possibilities. Bella reaches for the cup of blood, unleashes a bloodcurdling scream and the screen goes blank! Or, Edward delivers the baby, turns to Bella, murmurs, "Renesmee" (signifying that the baby is not the boy Bella dreamed of, but a girl) and the screen goes blank! Or perhaps Bella endures the burning transformation, her heart dramatically stops beating, she opens her vampire eyes for the first time…and the screen goes blank! You get the picture.

Another dramatic breaking point could be slightly later, once Bella is happily settled into her new vampire existence. Alice foresees that the Volturi will come to destroy Renesmee and the Cullen clan, understandably causing mass panic. When Jacob arrives and asks what’s wrong, Bella gravely tells him, "It's over. We've all been sentenced to die." And, er, you guessed it—the screen goes blank. This scenario wouldn’t leave as much plot for the final movie, however the real action in "Breaking Dawn" begins after this moment.

Wherever Part 1 ends, there are some moments that we cannot wait to see interpreted by Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and the gang. Firstly, Bella's wedding dress is sure to be a showstopper. We know that it's inspired by early 20th century styles, made of thin satin and cut in an inverted calla lily shape that gently hugs Bella's body. Countless designers have come up with their visions, and we have a feeling it’ll be as unique as Bella's ring.

Of course, after three movies full of seriously sensual kissing scenes, we’re eagerly anticipating Bella and Edward’s feather-filled honeymoon, especially since the first official movie still hints at this climactic moment.

The La Push pack’s mind communication also presents an interesting challenge. A lot of the werewolf plot in "Breaking Dawn" occurs while the Quileutes are in wolf form, communicating via thoughts. It will be interesting to see how screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and director Bill Condon decide to show these moments onscreen.

Two other complex aspects of translating the book to screen are creating vampire Bella and Renesmee. "New Moon" offers a glimpse of post-transformation Bella, so we have high expectations for KStew’s ability to alter her voice, expressions and composure to convincingly portray a vampire. As well, we know that 9-year-old Mackenzie Foy has been cast as Renesmee, but how on earth will she be convincingly transformed into a baby? Well, we'll just have to wait until November 2011—or 2012—to find out.

Make-up like Kristen bei der New Moon Premiere

You don't have to be a Twihard to realize how pretty Kristen Stewart is--or how out-of-this-world gorgeous her makeup looked last night at the Twilight: New Moon Los Angeles premiere! Sound like something you lovely ladies might be interested in?

Well, turns out that makeup artist Jillian Dempsey--the gorgeous mom of three, Patrick Dempsey’s wife and an amazingly accomplished makeup artist--was the brain behind this beauty look!

Jill told me that the makeup look really just revolved around Kristen's stunning peepers: “It doesn’t matter what you do, Kristen’s eyes are always a focal point. They are a beautiful shade of olive-green," she says. "For the premiere, I did more of a glam, smoldering eye than normal. The secret is layering different multiple shades of the same color, in this case, I used all Shu Uemura shades."

Next, Jillian lined her eyes with Avon Pro Kohl Eyeliner in charcoal, used Lancome Mascara in Black, and accentuated her eyebrows with Kevyn Aucoin Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown.

For the rest of her face, Jillian kept it simple. "Kristen’s skin is really pure. I just like to add a soft touch of matte color on her cheekbones. I used Avon Be Blushed in Blushing Nude, to show off her gorgeous skin.” And finally, "For her lips, I set off the intense eye look with a soft, rose-nude lip, Avon. Pro 3-in-1 in Frozen Rose.”

Hairstyle like Kristen bei der The Runaways Premiere

For the premiere of The Runaways, Frederic Fekkai stylist Adir Abergel gave Kristen Stewart a punky pompadour. It's an unusual hairstyle that was perfect for the opening of a movie about rock 'n' roll. If you're interested in going rocker chic, too, we got the breakdown from Abergel.

STEP 1: Abergel started by spraying Kristen's wet hair with hair spray, focusing on her roots. He then blow-dried her hair using his hands for a tousled effect.

STEP 2: Then, he took a one-inch curling iron and barrel curled two-inch sections from the top of her hair, pinning it in place starting at the hairline all the way to the crown.

STEP 3: He lightly waved the hair that was not in pin curls, and left it down.

STEP 4: To finish the look, he took the pin curls out and backcombed her roots for the pompadour effect. To keep the backcombing in place, he sprayed Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray at her roots, and used a paddle brush to smooth the top of her hair into place.

STEP 5: He completed Kristen's look by applying Fekkai Coiff Nonchalant Piecing & Forming Wax to the ends of her hair to create some separation, and sprayed on more hairspray to lock in the style.

Breaking Dawn "The most Anticipated movies of 2011"

In theaters: Nov. 18, 2011
Director: Bill Condon
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke, Dakota Fanning
Lowdown: A wedding, a pregnancy and the Volturi aren’t happy.

Drew McWeeny’s Take:
Bill Condon’s arguably the best filmmaker to touch the “Twilight” franchise so far, and he’s got the hardest job yet. Can he find a way to make the craziest book in the series work onscreen?

"Next Movie's" Best Couple, Best Multiple Movie Performance

NextMovie's Best Multiple-Movie Performance - Female

FTW: Kristen Stewart, “Eclipse,” “The Runaways” and “Welcome to the Rileys”
Newsflash to the world: Kristen Stewart is not just Bella anymore. Sure, that’s something that most Twi-Hards actually knew already, but the rest of the universe seemed to have missed the memo. Until this year, that is, when K-Stew blew away audiences and critics in the indie rock epic “The Runaways” and the intense family drama “Welcome to the Rileys.” Add yet another appearance as Bella and you have the makings of an actress that is going to be with us for decades to come — sparkly vampires or not.
#Runner-up: Mia Wasikowska, “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Kids Are All Right”

FTW: Best Couple
Bella and Edward

We know what half of you are thinking; finally, someone agrees with us and recognizes that Edward and Bella are fated to be together. And we also know what the other half of you are thinking: nooooo, she belongs with Jacob! Whichever way your jib is cut, though, you’ve got to admit that the heroes of both Team Jacob and Team Edward continue to set the bar for on-screen chemistry with their lady love. Now if only we can convince the producers of “The Twilight Saga” to include Team Coco in the next movie…

Micro Review: True Grit (2010)

As a whole, 2010 was a terrible year for movies save for a select few gems, not the least of which are The Town and Inception. To have a late-year release come and best those two films took me totally by surprise. The fact The Best Movie of 2010 comes from Joel and Ethan Coen does not. We didn't need a remake of John Wayne's classic Western, but the brothers have gone back to the source material, the 1968 novel of the same name, and done a retelling that's all their own. It's hard for a movie to get much more Good than this.

Robsten auf "Isle of wight" ?!

I'm kinda mad, or maybe not

UPDATE:  The world is a wonderful place full of beautiful people.  I went to the post office to inquire about the package confusion.  I don't have an apron stealing dolt living in my neighborhood.  Apparently, just a mail carrier that can't use his scanner.  It's on it's way to Florida!

I'm confused, and a little scared, and kinda mad, but mostly confused.

Remember the apron I made for my sister?

Well, yesterday I printed out the shipping label, put it in a box and set it out by the front door.  I went online to the post office and requested a pick up.  I went out for a couple of hours and when I came home the package was gone and a note was stuck in the front door from the mail carrier.  It was just a confirmation that my package was picked up.  (Or so I thought)  This morning I got up and found an email from the post office stating that the pickup was attempted but unsuccessful because the package was not found.

I re-read the letter that was left in the door and now I can't tell what it means.  It is a form letter with boxes to be checked with the status of the pickup.  My check mark is right in between "Picked up" and "Not picked up."

I think someone stole my apron.  Or maybe not.

So, Kelly, if you get it, I hope you like it.  It isn't great but it was the best I could do.

If you don't get it, then it was the most amazing apron ever and would have probably had magical powers that could have taken your cooking skillz to a whole new level.
I made this one yesterday.
I really love the colors in the stripes.
How sick are you of seeing aprons on this blog?

While I was sewing this, the sewing machine all of a sudden made this horrible banging noise and the needle broke and flew out and hit me in the corner of my eye.  I could have been blinded for life by a sewing machine.  I would have had to make up a better story though about how I got blinded because it would be just too dumb to tell that one.

I was cleaning the living room yesterday and I found this stuff under the cushions of the couch:
Could I have ever imagined this time last year that I would be taking a picture of the "trail mix" in my couch and posting it on the wide world web?  You're welcome.

Went to the thrift stores by the house to look for some lace and rick rack yesterday (this is when the apron stealing dolt made off with my package...or the mailman).  I found this box of vintage Christmas light bulbs under a bunch of junk.  They were marked 50 cents and they were having a 75% off Christmas sale so I bought these for 13 cents.  I saw some for sale on Etsy for $20 - $30.  Score!

I really want a new camera.  My point and shoot is just not cutting it anymore.  Unfortunately, it's just not in my budget right now...and probably will never be.
She's so pretty, let's just look at her for a minute.  Shhh, looking, not talking.

'The Runaways' "The Playlist list of the most underappreciated films of 2010"

"The Runaways"

Most critics and bloggers couldn’t get past the “OMG Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning are gonna play rockers” factor and well, shame on them. To be certain Flora Sigismondi’s feature directorial debut left a lot to be desired. It followed the biopic route to a deadening pulse and the director’s usually gorgeous visual eye was nowhere to be found. But you know what? Stewart and Fanning were solid in their roles and Michael Shannon as the crooked manager Kim Fowley was awesomely outrageous and over-the-top. While it won’t start a revolution, for ninety minutes, there are enough guilty pleasures to be found within to make it worth your while.

'The Runaways' (March 19)

Coming off the strength off her first two 'Twilight' hits, expectations were high for Kristen Stewart's turn as Joan Jett in this rock 'n' roll biopic of the all-girl '70s band. Again, most Twi-hards kept their distance. On the plus side, former child star Dakota Fanning finally came into her own with her adult role as rocker Cherie Currie.

'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' (June 30)

Twi-hards continued to line up in droves, beginning with midnight screenings, to drink in the third chapter of the Stephenie Meyer vamps vs. werewolves saga this summer. The world got plenty of shirtless shots of Taylor Lautner, not to mention the big-screen 'Twilight' parody 'Vampires Suck.'

Kristen kommt offiziell zu "People'e Choice Awards"

A star-studded selection of talent from film, TV and music including Malin Akerman, Julie Bowen, Michael Chiklis, Miranda Cosgrove, Kaley Cuoco, Taye Diggs, Lisa Edelstein, Zac Efron, Neil Patrick Harris, Teri Hatcher, the Kardashians, Minka Kelly, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Hugh Laurie, Taylor Lautner, Zachary Levi, AnnaLynne McCord, Leighton Meester, Stephen Moyer, Conan O'Brien, Jerry O'Connell, Jim Parsons, Pauley Perrette, Katy Perry, Natalie Portman, Emma Roberts, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Swift and Kate Walsh are scheduled to attend the PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS 2011, to be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, Wednesday, Jan. 5 (9:00-11:00 PM, live ET/delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Diddy-Dirty Money will perform a single from their latest album "Last Train To Paris." Kid Rock will perform a single from his just released critically acclaimed album, "Born Free," which was produced by Rick Rubin.
